My Alter Ego … or the struggle the find myself

An alter ego (Latin, “the other I”) is a second self, a second personality or persona within a person. It was coined in the early nineteenth century when schizophrenia was first described by early psychologists.[1]

The term alter ego is commonly used in literature analysis and comparison to describe characters who are psychologically identical, or sometimes to describe a character as an alter ego of the author, a fictional character whose behavior, speech or thoughts intentionally represent those of the author.

The characters Doctor Jekyll and Mister Hyde in Robert Louis Stevenson’s thriller Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde represent an exploration of the concept that good and evil exist within one person, constantly at war. Edward Hyde literally represents the doctor’s other self, a psychopathic being unrestrained by the conventions of civilized society, who shares a body with the doctor.

Hey, I did a few exhibitions here at the Cutting Room in NYC. My close friend Daniel Falgerho and I exhibited once together and we made a large canvas work of a photograph of a cute pair of small breasts. We mounted the canvas over a custom wooden box and made holes in the wood behind the canvas and made the nipples blink! It was great and got a lot of interesting comments and views…

Chelsea Lounge … Attack of the Japanese Art Theives…

2003, Chelse Lounge, 26th Street, New York City

I was robbed, ripped off of about 90 original paintings.  What an experience this was.  At least I did get a free gallery space out of the deal, and a few free bad-ass martinis!

Someday I will have to elaborate on this…

Master Minds After Hours…

Mr. Biggs, a true Master Mind

For a period of time while living in Time Square during about 1996-2000 I was working with my friend ‘Mr. Biggs’, Scott Sternick, who was operating after hours parties in fancy upscale restaurants at night on the upper east side of Manhattan.  I would load my 1972 camaro with as many spall paintings as I could at 2 in the morning and go to the place and hang my artworks throughout.  Most of the places had really great lighting, so I was usually able to get great exposure for each piece.  What a surreal experience this was with all the sheer madness and mayhem of the subculture world of New York City at night.  I never actually sold any of the paintings there, I honestly never really tried or made them necessarily available for sale, but it was completely worth the tension and exhaustion just to see and hear the people looking, interacting and talking about the works.  Most of what I hung during that time was Master Minds works, though many of the body and Alchemic Works made it throughout as well.  I also displayed quite a bit of works over the course of a couple of years at Mr. Biggs itself, but that is a whole other experience….Joey
